The week-long orientation program is for both Year 2 and Year 3 students with activities tailor-made for each individual group.

All activities are proper learning activities and you are NOT expected to be absent.

Year 3 students, please don’t forget to get ready some movie clips for your Processing Workshop on Monday. The workshop series is a bridge between Micro-Narratives, Generative Art & Literature, and the History & Philosophy of Computing.

“Searching for Ideas”: a Tesla model, an event of collective wisdom

Key words: WORK-IN-PROGRESS / COLLECTIVE WISDOM

To all CIL Year 3 students,

“Searching for Ideas” is a unique and exciting roundtable session in the Orientation Week to help you to turn loose ideas into a feasible poject. We believe in collective wisdom.

This session is based on an art space called Tesla that our study tour visited this summer. (For details, check the German Tour web-site to find out more.) Tesla is committed to bringing artists together to enable them to work through what they have to achieve a mature work.

This is how the session will work:

(1) write Linda or Yuejin…a time slot will be assigned to you during the three hours
(2) on that day, bring materials that you suspect, think, believe, assume… may have connection with your GT. Don’t worry if they make sense or not together.
(3) before you arrive at the session, make a few hypothesis of what your materials mean for a GT project, or simply come up with some questions for us…
(4) in the session, talk about each object (clips, paintings, drawings, fragments of writings, real objects, photos, collectibles from your own hobbies etc.) like you want to introduce to friends your favorite items. Tell us its history, little stories, why it’s special, and why you think it can be part of an art work…
(5) we’ll give you ideas as an observer what you can do with these objects..

Just as simple as this!

You don’t need to have any mature ideas. Consider it a privilege that you’ll be many wonderful minds of the CIL community will help to multiply what you have.

We only have 3 hours…which means we may only be able to accommodate 6 projects maximum.

It will be fun!

Please reply to yuejinho@cityu.edu.hk on or before 5p.m. by Friday (31/8).

SM4143 Sonic art

Filed under: News, Opportunities, curriculum & study plan

If you are interested in sound art, please enrol in 4143 “Sonic Art and the History of Sound and Noises.”

This coming edition of the class is taught by a Visiting Scholarship specially for CIL, Dr. John Drever from London University’s Goldsmiths College. He is an experienced musician and sound artist with great exposure and award-winning works. 4143 is really his expertise.

This is also a very important preparation course for SM3132 Sound Installation.

The course code 3132 may have misled us to think that it is easier than Sonic Art. I want to apologize for this mistake. 4143 definitely teaches you something more basic about sound.

This course may have a high chance of being cancelled by this Friday for low enrolment. Please consider.

A week-long orientation for CIL (year 2 + 3) students are now in preparation with the help of April, Dan, Damon, Dominique, Edwin, Karen, Lilian and Sam. The team is led by Yue-jin HO, 2004 CIL graduate, now full-time Senior Research Assistant at SCM to assist Linda with OBTL and teaching/learning projects. 50% of the program is also relevant for Intermedia students, who are also part of CIL.

It is going to be a week of fresh learning experiences. Please ensure your participation. A series of news will follow in the rest of August.

A huge welcome, too, to the 40 new CIL students (Year 2) and the 16 Intermedia students. The CIL community is growing. We need a better networking system and let’s begin with the O-week.

Curiosity is precious. Any questions, queries, do leave a message and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
