Less Asked Questions about Art… – a special kick-off for 2008-09, an alternative orientation event
August 18, 2008, 6:54 pm

Artistic creation prizes full autonomy of the artist. Reality bites… Young artists are often confronted with questions of how to publish their works, and how to sustain resources to keep making art. What is really happening in the art market? How does it work? Who are the players?… It is better that we learn about what happens than imagine it to be just a big monster devouring our freedom. Today, international art fair has become increasingly important as the locations where young artists find possible sponsors…

A special one-&-half-day lecture/workshop series is now in place to welcome CIL students and graduates back for the new academic year.

Our “Creativity-In-Practice: Learning outside Classroom” (CIP) grant for CIL students has enabled us to invite a special expert from Spain, Mr Alvaro Rodriguez, to visit SCM right before school begins:

August 29 (Friday)
Weather Report - Climate Change & Visual Arts, a Curatorial Experience”
- a special lecture: how to curate an exhibition with international participation by minimizing emission in view of environmental protection?
http://www.caam.net/en/exposiciones/b11/2007/visitas.htm
Time/Venue:
7:00-9:00pm @ CIL (Red zone, level 2, School of Creative Media)

August 30 (Saturday)
“Introduction to the Art Market”
- a 3-session interactive workshop: how do people decide upon a price for the art works we made? what is the game about?
Time/Venue:
10:00am-5:30pm (with lunch break and tea break) @ Screening Room (Red zone, level 2, School of Creative Media)

Session 1:
History of the art market, varieties, the role of museums and collectors and their impact on artists and art-making
Session 2:
Valuation Method and general procedures with case studies
Session 3:
Review of Tools needed for valuation: the Price Databases

***The THREE sessions are building upon one another. It is advisable that participants join all three sessions. There’ll be lots of on-the-spot small-group exercises, and case-studies.
Interested students, please reserve a place by emailing Linda.
