Organised by ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany and Goethe-Institut Hongkong
In collaboration with Chinese University of Hong Kong
Two-day workshop: A New Geography of Art in the Making [**the 3rd Global Art and the Museum (GAM) platform]
May 21 & 22, 2009 (Thu & Fri) / Goethe-Institut Hongkong / 14/F Hong Kong Arts Centre, Wanchai
The programme is in a way a different approach to the museum topic which is taken in Hong Kong. Hong Kong thinks from the ‘hardware’, from the museum building itself, and we try the approach from the ‘software’. Questions like ‘what is the relationship between contemporary art and the idea of a museum?’, ‘what kind of art finds its way to the museum and what not?’, ‘what does it mean when we talk about contemporary art?’ – these questions will be raised and discussed among the invited curators, museum directors and experts from the field.
Like in the previous GAM platforms which took place at the Goethe-Instituts in Sao Paulo and New Delhi, the 3rd platform also intends to discuss some of the most important issues of the globalisation of contemporary art, this time from an Asian perspective. The platform will be organised in three sessions. An introductory session will serve to present the project GAM – Global Art and the Museum (www.globalartmuseum.de) and to discuss its agenda with the participants of the workshop. Initiators: Prof. Dr. Hans Belting and Dr. Andrea Buddensieg (ZKM).
Session 1: China: Museum and Audiences of Contemporary Art
Session 2: South East Asia: A New Territory of Contemporary Art
Session 3: Hong Kong and Beyond: Metropolitan Art Centres in Comparison

Birds to Bells, Toads to Car Horns: Listening in to Acoustemologies in New Guinea, Europe, and Africa 1976-2009
Public Lecture, the University of Hong Kong
LECTURE OUTLINE AND SYNOPSIS
How have birds influenced the sonic and social evolution of song in the New Guineas rainforest? How have bells shaped ideas of time and space across pastoral communities in Europe? How have toads and car horns impacted ideas of rhythm in West Africa? While diverse, these questions turn out to be intimately connected. With audio and video examples, this talk explores these myriad connections, sometimes very systematic, sometimes less so, between sounds, cosmologies, and ecologies in order address the importance of acoustemology (acoustic epistemology), sound as a way of knowing the world.
THE ORGANISERS
This is a public lecture by the University of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics (HKIOA); the Institution of Engineers – Mechanical, Marine, Naval Architecture and Chemical (HKIE-MMNC) Division; the Hong Kong Institute of Environmental Impact Assessment (HKIEIA) and soundpocket Hong Kong are proud to present this event.
