The concept of Human Landscape – Building Community – Creativity & Creative Community-Building
A continuous cityscape of the Hong Kong city has been built over the last 150 years. The displacement of communities, street markets, historic landmarks, and traditional festivals by gated estates, mega-stores, glass towers and pop concerts is denying a time dimension of the city where any places or architectures over 30 years are old enough to be demolished and become collective memories of the city.
The proposed project is meant to conclude some of the curator’s (*Cheng Ping Hung) earlier creative community building exercises and personal involvement in social actions within local communities including Tai O, Lee Tung Street, St Francis Streets and particularly Kai Tak River. These acts were all relevant to bring forth an attention of the significance in civil rights, creative powers and public initiatives in transforming our immediate built environment. The directives of these experiences are bringing a new dimension for an alternative quality of life in our city including elements of community building, cultural sustainability, public education and creative spaces.
The project is intended to arouse the attention of human landscape in the long-term urban development of the Hong Kong city, by specifically studying Kai Tak River. It is meant to investigate the possibility of regaining a ground to balance conservation and development within our natural plus cultural landscape, with a community engagement among the creative urban design process.

The Horn of Plenty: Excess and Reversibility

Installation/Performance by Bababa International: Smooth Interpersonal Relationships
24-28 June, 2009 at Para/Site Art Space (12pm-7pm) @ 4 Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan

From 24-28 June, Bababa International will be operating a small nail salon within the Para/Site Art Space, where any visitor will be able to sit down, take their shoes off, and experience a pleasurable (albeit slgihtly humorous) adventure. Their installation will combine jostling functionality, novel design solutions, soothing sound and assembled objects that will culminate in an aesthetically-unusual, ephemeral temple, dedicated to the maintenance and beautification of humanities’s most vital appendages (the hands and feet).

Taking up the cross-disciplinary roles – an urban researcher, a media artist, a theorist and a software programmer – Carboni combines his artistic talents with his technical competencies. The exhibition will be the eighth platform after touring different cities from Europe to Asia. It is a site specific project, which studies the disappearing urban spaces in Hong Kong- Kai Tak River, Kowloon Walled City and To Kwa Wan. The project reflects the renewed recognition that space matters to cutting edge practices on urban and body transformation. By using the knowledge in both choreography and new media art, this project and its exhibition contribute to the articulation of a powerful concept/tool that links critical theory and ethical practice.

Italian artist Alessandro Carboni started his research on Kai Tak River and Nga Tsin Wai Village since May this year. He is delighted to share the fruits of his research with the public. As an extended inquiry, Carboni will also participate in the research project “Kai Tak River – Green Art” (title tentative), and exhibit his research project with other artists in the local mega art event October Contemporary.

Beyond the display of art: a critique of artistic culture vis-a-vis LV
June 19, 2009, 2:52 pm
Filed under: Controversies, broadened horizons | Tags:

Some local artists have called attention on the implications of the LV show to the gneral welfare of artistic development in HK. Here’s a portion of their petition:

“Gender & History of Education in HK”

The panel ‘Gender and History of Education in Hong Kong’ is part of the coming conference on “EDUCATION AND HERITAGE” at the Hong Kong Institute of Education
Date/Time: June 26th, 2009/ 2.30 – 4.00 pm
Venue: D2-LP-17
Language: English
Please visit http://www.ied.edu.hk/ceeh2009 for more information.

About the panel:
In the past decades, theoretical developments in academia have stimulated researchers to seriously rethink some pertinent historical questions such as what constitutes “history”, who are the “historical subjects”, and what can be counted as “historical materials”. Gender studies, among others, is an important impetus to this exciting reconceptualisation. The three papers in this panel, with different empirical focus, will illuminate the usefulness of a gendering perspective in broadening our understanding and writing of history of education in Hong Kong. Together, they uncover voices and experiences of women, be they of young girls, women teachers, or university women, which have been silenced, hidden, and seldom studied in the field. More importantly, the theoretical and methodological issues that these papers raise will help destabilize conventional discussion! s of the educational policies in colonial Hong Kong, the history of the teaching profession, and “educative influences”, and thereby open up new areas of concern.

Moderator: Ms. Evelyn Ng (Women’s Studies Research Centre, University of Hong Kong).
Paper 1: “A position of usefulness”: Gendering history of education in colonial Hong Kong (Patricia Pok-kwan Chiu, PhD candidate, University of Cambridge).
Paper 2: More than a change in number: Gendering the historical development of primary school teaching in Hong Kong (Dr. Anita Kit-wa Chan, Department of Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences & Technology, HKIEd.
Paper 3: Autobiography as archive and educational philosophy: Case studies of Hong Kong women’s stories of self (Dr. Staci Ford, Department of History, University of Hong Kong).
